At the 2011 iDirect Global Partner Summit we were excited to present our newest product developments and future roadmap plans to our customers.
Here are a few highlights:
iDX 2.3 was launched on April 1, 2011. Not an April Fools’ joke, iDX 2.3 is the latest Evolution software release including TRANSEC with ACM, FIPS 140-2 Level 1 compliant software and FIPS 140-2 Level 2 compliant hardware.
This release is focused on features essential for our Defence customers.
iDX 3.0 is a much anticipated release for our enterprise, maritime and energy customers and cellular providers. This release brings multi-channel demodulation and SCPC Return for lower total cost of ownership, as well as new service offerings and efficiency gains. iDX 3.0 is an extremely compelling release for all Evolution customers and iNFINITI customers looking to upgrade. Panasonic Avionics is pressing forward with the development of a new Ka-band antenna and hybrid Ku/Ka antenna to support ultra-high-speed airborne Internet when Ka-band satellite-based connectivity becomes available, and says it is looking to begin testing in the second quarter of next year.
“Today, Panasonic is actively pursuing a Ka antenna R&D development, as well as a hybrid Ku/Ka antenna development. Panasonic is working with a key technology partner to develop our antenna in anticipation of Ka becoming available for the aviation market in the 2012/2013 time frame,” says a Panasonic spokesman.
CETel (Central European Telecom Services), the German Teleport & Satellite Service Provider, acquired SeaMobile Europe, a company of the SeaMobile Inc. and MTN family. The satellite communication provider based in Paris (France) will, in the future, perform under the origin name of Geolink Satellite Services, as an independent entity from CETel Germany. In early April of 2011 the companies reached the respective closing of the transaction of all assets to CETel. Trinity Advisers Limited acted as exclusive financial advisor to SeaMobile, Inc..
Geolink Satellite Services is well-known for its broad product portfolio comprising fix and mobile satellite services based Iridium, Inmarsat and iDirect technology for governmental, corporate and maritime customers. The company has an excellent reputation in the African region, especially in the French speaking markets. Within these regions, Geolink is a key supplier of satellite-based communications services for NGOs, government institutions, oil and gas, mining companies, media, fishing and offshore racing.
Energy and utility companies around the globe are undertaking new initiatives to modernize the way they offer and deliver services to their customers. Advances in technology have created a new way for computing and communications to be integrated into the grid in ways that were never possible with older technologies. The new smart grid will provide a more reliable, secure and cost-effective way to generate, transmit and distribute power to consumers.
Communication networks play a central role in the development and reach of smart grid initiatives. The move to IP-based applications for security, operations and two-way data exchange creates a new level of interaction between utilities and their customers. Many communication technologies will have an impact on the development of the smart grid, and satellite communications plays a complementary role helping to increase the reach and reliability of the communications infrastructure.
We just wrapped up our first Global Partner Summit held in Barcelona, Spain, with over 85 partners in attendance.

Highlights from the Summit include:
- Simon Bull, Comsys, presented the challenges and opportunities faced by satellite operators in our industry. This includes slower growth in the general broadband access/enterprise markets, and the faster-growing segments for the maritime, SCADA and cellular backhaul verticals. How Ka-band will change our industry dynamics and it is inevitable so be prepared. Successful operators need to differentiate based on providing customer value at the application level.
- iDirect presented high level strategies including company, marketing and product. We also offered sneak previews into new products for the Utility and SCADA markets, and go-to-market plans to capture emerging 3G opportunities in cell backhaul, We also reported on new applications in the maritime market that are driving new bandwidth requirements.
