Ian, tell us a bit about Sevis, the products you offer and the role you play to help Mobile operators deliver services.
Sevis Systems is a leading provider of mobile backhaul optimization and enhanced SS7 signaling defense solutions to mobile and fixed line network operators around the world. Several of the largest global operators rely on our products to increase operational efficiencies, save cost and enable new innovative services.

When it comes to 2G and 3G optimization, what techniques do you employ to help reduce the traffic?
There are a number of challenges with 2G and 3G optimization. With 2G, the challenge is that the majority of the traffic is voice, which is non-compressible data. Therefore, we have to focus on aggregating a number of small RTP voice packets into a larger IP packet and then applying our proprietary header compression algorithms to remove RTP and L3 headers, which can make up a significant percentage of the overall size of the IP packet.
With 3G, the challenge is that all of the user plane data is encrypted between the mobile handset and the Radio Network Controller (RNC). Therefore, we are limited in the techniques that we can apply to optimize this interface. Again we primarily use packet aggregation and compression techniques to optimize the transport layer and control plane signaling data as much as possible. One other optimization benefit we have seen with 3G is that some Vendors’ NodeBs generate a large number of very small packets, which can sometimes swamp the VSAT modem causing performance issues. The Sevis IBO application is able to aggregate these small packets into large packets, therefore reducing the packet processing load on the VSAT modem.
What sort of optimization savings do you see in these networks and what are the variables that can impact performance?
The optimization results we see depend on the RAN technology and the traffic profile. With 2G where the majority of the traffic is voice, we see approximately 50% bandwidth savings over an un-optimized link. Due to the encryption issue with 3G, the optimization savings are much less and fall within the 20 to 30% range.
What differentiates the Sevis solution from other optimization solutions on the market?
I think the main differentiator is that Sevis has a deep understanding of mobile signaling protocols all the way from the network edge, where our optimizers are deployed through to the core network where our SS7 signaling defense products are deployed. This knowledge helps us better understand our customers’ networks and their end-to-end service requirements. Our products also support legacy E1 interfaces, for those customers who still have this technology deployed in their transmission networks. We also offer a class-leading warranty of two years on our products and finally, we are known for our customer service.
What value does integrating the Sevis software into the iDirect X7-EC bring to customers that may be looking for 2G/3G optimization?
I think that there are two main benefits that this brings to the customer. Firstly, it provides a single-box solution, which requires one power supply, one management interface and reduces the probability of a hardware failure. And secondly, the customer only needs to deal with one vendor, iDirect, which simplifies the purchasing process.
