Telenor’s THOR 7 Ka Band Mobility Service Ready for Commercial Operation

The Ka-band payload offers regional coverage with a favourable look angle over the main European shipping lanes and utilises high-powered spot beams, providing unprecedented performance for maritime applications.

Since the commercial handover of the THOR 7 satellite in June 2015, Telenor Satellite has been carrying out a Ka-band testing programme prior to its commercial launch. The final testing phase involved more than 15 customers running sea trials on approx. 30 vessels, with up to 50 remote terminals testing the service across THOR 7’s footprint. Thanks to the valuable contributions of our pilot customers involved in the final testing phase, we can now launch our mobility Ka-band service with confidence.

Telenor Satellite’s THOR 7 HTS Ka-band service offer 6-9 Gbps throughput with up to 25 simultaneously active spot beams. Intelsat Announces Five-Year In-Orbit Servicing Agreement with Orbital ATK

Orbital-ATKIntelsat and Orbital ATK have announced a new satellite life extension service agreement where Orbital ATK will extend the life of an Intelsat satellite by five years using the company’s Mission Extension Vehicle (MEV).

Orbital ATK will manufacture, test and launch the first Mission Extension Vehicle, MEV 1, based on the GEOStar platform, and will conduct in-orbit testing to validate the spacecraft. Launch is currently slated for 2018, with mission extension service for Intelsat beginning in 2019.

DataPath Launches New GATE-5000 Self-Contained Remote Networking System

Using a DataPath GATE-5000 ruggedized kit with either satellite or cellular connectivity provides users with one consolidated access point to the Internet, public switched telephone network and secure virtual private networks (VPNs). The kit’s transportability and simplified user panel make the solution ideal for remote operations such as newsgathering, government and military, disaster recovery, and oil and gas applications.

Cobham, Inmarsat and MCN Sign Largest Fleet Xpress Contract Yet

MCN-FXBeijing Marine Communication & Navigation Company, partner of Inmarsat and Cobham Satcom, has won the largest Inmarsat Fleet Xpress installation project to date with Nanjing Tanker Corporation of China. The contract came just two weeks after the launch of Fleet Xpress, bringing always-on, high-speed broadband capability worldwide to 70 ships. The agreement enables smart shipping connectivity to drive performance optimization and improvements to crew communications and welfare for NTC vessels.

Cobham and MCN will manage the roll-out of Cobham’s Sailor 100 Global Xpress (GX) and Sailor 60 GX antenna systems to NTC. The 1-meter Sailor 100 GX is based on Cobham Satcom’s Sailor VSAT technology platform, designed to simplify installation and operation while delivering radio performance with strong link stability and service reliability. The 60cm Sailor 60 GX leverages a new compact, lightweight carbon fiber composite/aluminum design. Inmarsat Performs Live Global Xpress Broadcast from Rio de Janeiro

Intelsat to Distribute BBC World News Across Four Satellites and IntelsatOne

BBC BuildingBBC World News has renewed and expanded its contract with Intelsat to use multiple video neighborhoods and the IntelsatOne terrestrial network for the distribution of Standard Definition (SD) and High Definition (HD) content across several continents. Under the multi-year agreement, BBC World News will be delivered to millions of viewers in the Americas and Asia from Intelsat’s Galaxy 13, Intelsat 19, Intelsat 20 and Intelsat 21 satellites.

Intelsat’s Galaxy 13 satellite at 127 degrees west will reach cable distribution neighborhoods in North America, and Intelsat 21 at 302 degrees east will reach a Latin American cable distribution neighborhood with the highest cable head-end penetration on the continent. Continue>
