Moses: Today we face a new reality in the market; one where end-users have an unrelenting demand for more bandwidth at all times. Whether that is aboard a maritime vessel, or out in the middle of the ocean on an oil rig, the expectation to do more is very real. We are talking more people, more devices, more bandwidth-hungry applications. And it is an expectation that satellite service providers must rapidly be in position to address.

The 9-series remotes are designed with this very challenge in mind; able to handle this level of unrelenting demand across high-end mobility and enterprise markets, as well as specific applications for government and defense.

The 9350 is highly focused on delivering unprecedented levels of performance and efficiency. The rack-mounted 9350 is the fastest iDirect TDMA remote to date with over 150 Mbps of aggregate throughput with DVB-S2/ACM and Adaptive TDMA, and a path to well over 200 Mbps via support with Adaptive SCPC.

The 9-Series: Matching Security and Innovation for Government and Defense

iDirect 9-Series Satellite RoutersHere’s a challenge to consider: How to provide government and defense agencies with access to the latest technology advancements while ensuring they maintain the proper security and accreditation requirements for military operations.

With the release of the next-generation 9-series of satellite remotes and defense line cards (DLCs), iDirect continues to raise the bar across three fronts of innovation: performance, efficiency, and security. This week we focus on security.

Security starts with the network platform. The iDirect Evolution® platform is FIPS 140-2 (Federal Information Processing Standards) Level 2 certified and now Level 3 certifiable. Obtaining  Level 3 certification means the encryption module requires additional  tamper detection and the ability to zeroize all plain text critical security parameters (CSPs) when unauthorized access is detected. As an added layer of security, the module uses ports that are physically separated from other ports, or interfaces that are logically separated using a trusted path from other interfaces. All of these features are now available with the 9-Series and defense line cards on the Evolution Platform.

To ensure the highest level of military security standards, the platform also offers the latest TRANSEC (transmission security) enhancements and encryption, which help to mask communication activity—a necessity for military operations to safeguard mission-critical information exchange from adversaries.

iDirect’s new 9-Series remotes are particularly valuable in this regard as they support dual-domain TRANSEC; this allows the remotes to maintain two separate sets of security certificates for two different TRANSEC networks simultaneously. One-Way TRANSEC is a new feature that secures broadcast traffic from the hub to a network of receive only remotes, while two-way TRANSEC is for both receive and transmit. Read More

Optimizing Your Network for Performance and Efficiency

Ever-increasing business and personal connectivity demands continue to take service expectations to a new level. In mobility markets like super yacht and luxury cruise, or for high-end enterprise like oil & gas, the service imperative has transformed to accommodating more people on the network at all times running bandwidth-intensive applications.

With it, the message to satellite service providers has become clear: Deliver a service that allows for more—more people, more devices, and more applications.

Helping to meet this imperative, iDirect has debuted next-generation technology that takes efficiency and performance to new levels, all with the ability to leverage their current investment in iDirect technology.

iDirect's Universal Line Cards (ULCs)On the efficiency side it starts with our next-generation Universal Line Cards, iDirect’s most powerful to date. The ULC-R (return line cards) will feature aggregate symbol rates up to 29Msps, with individual carriers up to 15Msps. These levels are significantly higher performance beyond iDirect’s other line cards and have room to grow as we add more waveform capabilities to the system. Future capabilities of the ULC-R also feature 16QAM MODCODs for improved efficiency.

The ULC-T (transmit line cards), on the other hand, support DVB-S2/ACM and also higher, more efficient MODCODs such as 32APSK as well as embedded pre-distortion. This helps customers realize new gains in efficiency and performance when operating on transponders closer to saturation. The ULC-Ts are compatible with the existing hub equipment, yet are future proof with DVB-S2X readiness being able to support up to 125 MHz bands at much higher MODCODs.

These new features are complementary to iDirect’s existing bandwidth efficiency features such as smaller roll-off factors as well as inbound phase tracking, and adaptive waveform enhancements that allow for optimal carrier spacing and adaptability to save bandwidth. Coupled with the availability of higher MODCODs and additional FEC rates, each of these efficiency gains permits greater throughput on the same amount of bandwidth. This ultimately increases profitability or lowers total cost of ownership via OPEX savings.

Complementing performance gains on the hub side is the 9350 on the remote side. Targeted at high-end commercial mobility and defence markets, the rack-mounted 9350 is the fastest iDirect TDMA remote to date with over 150 Mbps of aggregate throughput with DVB-S2 and Adaptive TDMA, and a path to well over 200 Mbps with Adaptive SCPC. Today, an increasing number of maritime vessels are relying on VSAT to run safer, more intelligent and productive operations.

Currently, the number of VSAT-equipped maritime vessels stands at roughly 13,200, according to the NSR Maritime SATCOM Markets, 4th Edition. It is a number that could eclipse 32,700, representing an 8.6% compound annual growth rate (CAGR) by 2025.

The driving factors for the adoption of VSAT vary based on the segment of the market. For instance, merchant shipping relies on the technology for crew welfare and remote IT services, among others. Fishing—a segment that historically has relied primarily on cellular connectivity—is looking to VSAT to enable more on board, such as online sales of catches. While cruise looks more to support higher-speed Internet, onboard wireless service, entertainment and streaming video, and oil and gas looks to lean heavily on live video, among other uses.

Regardless of what the service is being used for, the one common denominator across the entire market is this: VSAT has fundamentally shifted from a cost center to a cost saver in maritime. And that means the technology—from the space segment to the ground segment—must be ready to accommodate the growing demand to do more out at sea. Read More

Inside iDirect’s End-to-End Solutions Lab

There is a lot that goes into testing and validating the performance, scalability and configuration of iDirect technology. Chris Boyd, iDirect’s Network Solutions Architect, will show you how we test our reference architectures to ensure ease of deployment for you across the network.

With iDirect Verified Designs, we actively identify, test and document every step of the network configuration, and match the correct router and switching equipment with satellite equipment. This helps to ensure that the services and functionality set up on the satellite side can carry through on the terrestrial side.

Overall, the role of the End-to-End Solutions Lab is to work with various different technologies to determine how best they will scale in any environment, and the ways in which they are being used in our customers’ networks. One Box Solutions: iDirect SatHaul™ and X7-EC are On the Move

As iDirect finished the second quarter of the year, we saw the first deliveries of the X7-EC Satellite Router(s), along with iDirect SatHaul™ to support LTE backhaul over satellite. We are very excited to have this product in the marketplace, which helps improve the efficiency and user experience for connecting 4G base stations over satellite.

Proof-of-Concept Trials Deemed Successful

During the first half of 2016, we conducted various proof-of-concept (POC) trials with different mobile operators to see how our solution would perform in their specific environments. Out of these tests we learned a good amount about some of the different network setups, and had the ability to try the iDirect SatHaul™ optimization with most of the popular infrastructure equipment from Ericsson, Huawei, Nokia and Alcatel Lucent.

Even though there were a few adjustments to make in order to work in the different operator environments, the standard interface of LTE seems to make integration much simpler than 2G or 3G networks which were much less standardized. We had success optimizing 4G traffic over all of these different infrastructure set ups and improving the 4G experience over satellite.

With key features like TCP Acceleration, header and payload compression, and optimization of IPSec links, iDirect SatHaul™ is an effective solution in 4G networks to improve the user experience and throughput when using satellite. Read More

Inmarsat and VT iDirect Form Joint R&D Partnership to Develop Next Generation Services

New agreement supports Inmarsat ‘building block’ development strategy

Inmarsat-iDirect-logosInmarsat and VT iDirect announced an extension of their long-term strategic partnership with the formation of a joint research & development (R&D) team – i2 – to support the development of the next generation satellite communications (satcom) technologies. This venture is a logical next step in the Inmarsat and VT iDirect relationship, having worked successfully together over the past four years to develop the GX program.

The R&D project team, which will be based at Inmarsat’s headquarters in London, will focus on the proof-of-concept and prototype phases for new satcom technologies. Inmarsat and VT iDirect will jointly assess the commercial potential of each new technology before the decision is taken to deploy it in the form of a new product or service. Both companies’ partners and end-users will enjoy privileged access to the new technologies.

Among the first projects the team will address are the creation of new solutions to support the growing integration of satcom and terrestrial networks, the requirement for smaller, more powerful satcom terminals, and the boosting of waveform performance.
