High Throughput Satellites: The Bigger Picture

HTS-beam-vs-traditional-beamThe term High Throughput Satellite (HTS) has become synonymous with the satellite industry’s promising future. And when we think of HTS, we often focus narrowly on throughput. Yet, the future of how satellite connectivity hinges on much more than how fast can we speed up an end-user network.

That’s because HTS is more than a term. It’s an important step forward in a broader technology evolution that encompasses every aspect of satellite networking. It means redefining how we operate our industry and manage our respective businesses.

Here are some critical points to consider for the future of our industry – four areas where we need to take not just one step forward, but a giant leap ahead.

#1 – Create higher capacity efficiencies and enable intelligent payloads.

HTS, along with DVB-S2X, transforms the performance and efficiency of satellite capacity. DVB-S2X delivers higher efficiencies and saturates larger transponders (with time slicing), helping to bring costs per bits down.

When implemented to its fullest, satellite operators can design next-generation architectures with features like beam hopping to adjust their payloads based on real-time demand on the ground. Intelligent payloads require the integration of ground and space infrastructure to measure and respond to demand. So terminals designed for HTS must support the full DVB-S2X standard – that’s the key to much more significant efficiency gains in the years ahead. Read More

Intelsat Signs eProcess on Epic for Banking Services in Africa

Intelsat announced that eProcess International, an affiliate of pan-African banking conglomerate Ecobank Group, has signed an agreement to use the Intelsat Epic platform to expand and strengthen its corporate banking services throughout Africa. The solution incorporates high-throughput Intelsat Epic C-band spot beam capacity available on Intelsat 35e, which is scheduled to launch in the second quarter of 2017. This capacity complements the existing eProcess network as it is based on wide beam C-band connectivity on Intelsat 903.

EProcess connects head offices and affiliates across 27 countries in Africa, enabling banking transactions and corporate data exchanges through its network. Given the growth in commerce across the African continent, the company sought to enhance its network to address increasing transaction volumes for its customers.

According to Intelsat, eProcess is able to accommodate its growing bandwidth demand across its pan-African network by leveraging the backwards compatibility of Intelsat Epic and the higher efficiency of the spot beams. Continue >

I knew that satellite technology could solve issues unaddressed by cellular or terrestrial bandwidth. And I understood that with the emergence of High Throughput Satellites (HTS), the satellite industry was at a major transformational moment.

So it was fitting that one of my first roles at VT iDirect was to ensure our infrastructure could unlock the power of these satellites and enable a new cost model for our customers – and I am thrilled to say we are seeing our HTS partners successfully rolling out their services on the VT iDirect platform.

Today, my role has grown to leading the talented VT iDirect organization as President and Chief Executive Officer. As I take on this great responsibility, my sole focus is to ensure our clients have the best technology and services in our industry to grow their businesses and capitalize on the dramatic changes that are happening in the industry.

We are bringing a fresh mindset to key issues that define the satellite industry’s future. We’re advancing the role of satellite technology including how this technology’s role can be expanded in the end-to-end telecom network; identifying new market opportunities for satellite communications, and collaborating across our ecosystem to co-develop industry-leading and industry-changing technology. These are the fundamental themes driving my leadership at VT iDirect.

Segovia: Axesat is constantly looking for the best way to deliver the best solutions to respond to our customer’s needs. First Intelsat Epic High Throughput Satellite Launched into Orbit

Intelsat 29e, the first of Intelsat’s EpicNG High Throughput Satellite (HTS) series, launched Jan. 27 from French Guiana aboard an Ariane 5 vehicle. With C- and Ku-band coverage over the Americas and North Atlantic region, the satellite will be placed into service at 310 degrees east, where it replaces Intelsat 1R.

The Boeing-built Intelsat 29e combines wide beams and spot beams with frequency reuse technology and an advanced digital payload. The payload can digitally redirect a satellite beam to areas of greater demand, and brings improved security as well.

Intelsat EpicNG is optimized to provide satellite connectivity for applications including the Internet of Things (IoT), enterprise, wireless infrastructure, aeronautical and maritime mobility, and government. The HTS platform is backwards compatible and fully interoperable with Intelsat’s existing satellite fleet and terrestrial infrastructure. The platform’s open architecture allows customers to have control over service offerings and hardware selection, providing differentiation of service offerings. Continue>

For example:

  • Inmarsat made significant strides toward a full commercial launch of Inmarsat GX, its seamless global platform for high-speed Ka-band satellite services, covering virtually everywhere on Earth and targeted at both the mobility and fixed markets
  • Intelsat announced its IntelsatOne Flex service, a high-performance wholesale Mbps managed service on Intelsat EPIC as well as wide-beam Ku-Band capacities. Service providers will be able to control their networks across multiple spot beams through customization of their own service plans and QoS prioritizations
  • Telenor continues to build momentum towards the launch of the THOR 7 satellite constellation, which will deliver a Ka-band HTS payload of up to nine Gbps of throughput across 25 spot beams over the North, Mediterranean and Baltic Seas

Full Speed Ahead: HTS Spurs Change in Maritime

Consider the following findings from the fourth edition of the COMSYS Maritime VSAT Report:

  • Between 2012 and 2013, VSAT installations increased by 25% and service revenues grew by 15%
  • By 2018, there will likely be 44,242 vessels with VSAT, which is more than double COMSYS’ last recorded number in 2013
  • VSAT data rates in some segments have increased from 10Mb in 2007 to 100Mb in 2013
  • Commercial freight service VSAT revenues are likely to reach $506 million in 2018, accounting for roughly one-third of the total maritime market
  • VSAT service revenues for oil rigs and oil and gas maritime vessels are projected to reach $498 million by 2018
  • Cruise market service revenues have a projected value of $135 million by 2018

The Challenge: Meeting Increasing Demand

Upshot of all this growth is that as the maritime industry booms, the demand for sufficient bandwidth is rising precipitously. This is true across various segments of the maritime market. Continue>
