Live from Monaco Yacht Show: Kymeta, VT iDirect, Panasonic and Intelsat demo high-speed VSAT system, delivering Internet and TV service over first-of-its-kind flat panel antenna

KymetaiDirect has partnered with flat-panel antenna manufacturer Kymeta and Panasonic Avionics to host a live network demonstration at the Monaco Yacht Show. The demo will stream Panasonic’s eXTV service, as well as Skype sessions and Internet access, running over iDirect’s new high-performance 9350 remote router, which will be connected to Kymeta’s new ultra-sleek flat-panel antenna subsystem module (ASM).

The demo is located in front of Restaurant Le Virage. Streaming TV and free Wi-Fi can be experienced in the VIP lounge during the following times:

  • Wednesday, Sept 28 from 9:30 am to 5:00 pm
  • Thursday, Sept 29 from 9:30 am to 5:00 pm
  • Friday, Sept 30 from 9:30 am to 5:00 pm and 7:00 pm to 11:00 pm

The demo is enabled by the iDirect 9350 satellite remote. With the 9350, iDirect introduces a new class of remote ideal for the high-throughput expectations. Targeted at the high-end commercial mobility markets, the 9350 initially features up to 150Mbps of aggregate throughput Adaptive TDMA performance with a software upgrade path to well over 200Mbps via support for Adaptive SCPC.

Kymeta’s ground-breaking mTenna technology is a lightweight, metamaterials-based flat-panel ASM that can be recessed into the structure of super yachts making the ASM invisible. By using metamaterials as the basis of the design instead of a phased array approach the Kymeta ASM consumes an extraordinarily low amount of power – in fact, less than 15 Watts (that’s right, not kilowatts).

The Kymeta solution can scale with the use of the Kymeta antenna combiner to enable significantly higher Internet connection speeds than legacy maritime communications systems and is designed for next-generation GEO, MEO and LEO satellites. Read More

One Box Solutions: Bringing XipLink™ to iDirect’s X7-EC

Watch it now: XipLink CEO Jack Waters stopped by iDirect’s booth during Satellite 2016 and discussed the XipLink application on the X7-EC with Terry Neumann.

Satellite service providers have long valued XipLink’s suite of tools to resolve problems related to acceleration, compression and optimization to better utilize bandwidth and provide more efficient operation. Plus, the end-user experience is boosted through faster response times.

Normally, deploying XipLink technology requires installing separate hardware at the remote location – but this isn’t always possible and it adds complexity.

A Single-Box Solution

So iDirect worked with XipLink to offer its Virtual (XV) Optimization as an application that can be directly loaded into iDirect’s X7-EC embedded computing remote.

The X7-EC makes it far easier for service providers to utilize XipLink as part of an integrated, consolidated solution. The flexibility of installing one physical remote that can run additional third-party software to deliver specialized services is compelling.

XipLink capabilities such as TCP acceleration, data compression, link bonding and balancing, packet coalescing, and byte caching allow service providers to build a stronger business case for using satellite to support many different enterprise needs.

To learn more about the EC series, attend our upcoming webinar, “Bringing Powerful Applications to the Service Edge,” on June 14. Register here.

A Secure 4G/LTE Backhaul Experience Shouldn’t Compromise Throughput

Richard DeasingtonBy Richard Deasington, Director of Market Development at iDirect

Global demand for 4G/LTE services has hit a new threshold. No matter the location—urban, rural or remote—user expectations remain the same: high speed and high quality, no compromise. This means that mobile operators are tasked with building-out networks that meet end-user expectations, yet still ensure privacy of the data being transmitted across the network.

However, this presents a difficult challenge for those that must leverage satellite for remote and rural locations or for emergency response networks. For satellite, achieving this level of security often comes at the cost of speed and efficiency.

Here’s the difficulty: Previous generations of networking technology encryption were provided from the handset to the RNC – within the core network. LTE has changed this configuration, moving the RNC functionality out to the edge of the network. This has been done in order to improve efficiency and reduce the latency. The resulting effect is that now the LTE base station processes the clear text of all traffic.

When it comes to backhauling this traffic to the network, the recommendation by the 3GPP is to carry all traffic from the base station inside an IPsec tunnel back to the security gateway in the core network. This, according to 3GPP specifications, ensures security.

Breaking the Norm

A standard LTE implementation uses IPsec to secure all communications by authenticating and encrypting the data from the LTE eNodeB through the network to the Security Gateway in the EPC. In the past, optimizing this encrypted traffic over a satellite link was not possible as the encryption process scrambled all the information being carried. Read More
