When it comes to scaling a satellite communications network, hub-side infrastructure is one of the largest capital expenses service providers face. In fact, the infrastructure decision can make or break the ability to profitably expand, enter new markets and introduce new services.

With HTS and DVB-S2X, this reality has reached a new level of importance. With greater demand for higher throughputs and more satellite bandwidth comes the need to deploy and manage large-scale networks. Network operators need to change the cost model for ground infrastructure deployment, keeping up with demand without dramatically increasing capital and operating expenses.

Today, there are key advances in gateway technology. Consider hub solutions leveraging virtualization for processing capabilities that significantly increase the teleport’s capabilities to support extensive networks and higher throughputs in the same space. When it comes to operating an efficient network and managing scale for an HTS/DVB-S2X platform, the key is to implement intelligent terminals. And the remote design enabled with full DVB-S2X capabilities is a critical aspect of delivering performance and efficiency gains to the overall solution.

Traditionally, satellite remote performance and features were over-engineered to future capabilities to avoid having to swap out the remotes soon after rollout. The features were largely encoded in hardware, and pay-as-you-grow, while well established for various hub-side capabilities, were not available for remotes. As such, the latest remotes carry a high cost to operate and could become a network’s single greatest cost factor when rolling out large networks.

Future Investments in VSAT: What you Need to Know

…Another company at the forefront of the technology revolution in satellite is iDirect. The company aims to overcome barriers of interoperability and transition satellite service providers toward a fully standards-based and agile service model. “We are moving toward what we are calling dynamic service delivery — the ability to offer services on demand to anyone that needs it whenever and wherever they need it. It requires an open flexible ground system built with the latest networking standards and Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) that can fully integrate with the core Internet Protocol (IP) network as well as the spacecraft technology,” says iDirect’s new Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Kevin Steen.

Steen says the steps to get here are quite complex with the need to look at the underlying infrastructure to ensure companies like iDirect are enabling ground and space concurrently for scale, performance and efficiency. “The next step is to virtualize the functions on the network to allow unification of all functions. From there we add in the ability to program the networks for real-time operations and automation through APIs. As we do this in concert with the space segment, we are enabling a much more agile business model that will allow for lower capital expenditure and ongoing operating expenditure. We can get to market faster with service and change the delivery of them based on the customer requirements,” he adds.

iDirect is encouraging VSAT service providers to adopt network architectures traditionally associated with cellular providers, such as using the evolved packet core as a framework. Steen believes there is significant value in aligning VSAT to the same methods and techniques wireless providers use. He says these terrestrial providers have already optimized their networks for mobility and made it easier to deploy value-added services. “By adopting these techniques, VSAT takes advantage of all these pre-existing mobility benefits. Plus, it enables clean interfaces, so VSAT ‘plugs into’ terrestrial mobility networks without integration challenges,” Steen adds. “Through this means, VSAT can embrace upcoming 5G architectures and standards, introducing new synergies with wireless providers on the ground. So instead of the VSAT industry worrying about competition over 5G frequencies, VSAT becomes an essential extension of the 5G infrastructure, supporting telco reach to all areas of the globe.” Read More

SES Achieves Major Performance and Efficiency Gains Over VT iDirect’s DVB-S2X Technology

Latest OTA test leveraging new iQ Series remote sets another industry milestone with forward channel rate of 5.7 bps/Hz as iDirect enters beta testing phase

SES-iDirect Blog piciDirect  announced another successful over-the-air (OTA) test of its next-generation DVB-S2X technology. The test was conducted with the world-leading satellite operator, SES, over C-Band and achieved 5.7 bps/Hz.

The DVB-S2X forward channel and Adaptive TDMA return channel OTA testing was conducted on the SES-4 satellite and leveraged iDirect’s next-generation iQ Desktop Remote, Universal Line Cards and Intelligent Gateway appliance.

VT iDirect recently announced its next-generation DVB-S2X technology, which is based on a powerful, customized ASIC (Application-Specific Integrated Circuit) chipset and powers the new iQ Series family of remotes. iDirect’s iQ Series, which will operate in both DVB-S2X and DVB-S2 mode, is targeted for broadband, enterprise, and mobility applications and packaged in desktop, rack-mount, board level and embedded compute form factors that will become available over the course of this year. The family of new remotes are software upgradeable to license added network capabilities and higher throughput levels, thereby reducing the cost of ownership, as well as improving flexibility across a broad array of markets.
