Helping To Save Lives In Haiti

From SatMagazine

iDirect VSATThe 1.8m antenna sitting on top of the laundry building at Hospital Sacre Coeur in Milot, Haiti, a rural northern community located only 70 miles from the still-devastated city of Port au Prince, might not look like much to passersby.

But to the dedicated staff at the over-stretched 73-bed hospital — many of whom are volunteers working around the clock to care for Haitians who have suffered unimaginable disease and hardship since last year’s horrific earthquake — that antenna symbolizes the difference between life and death. This life-saving antenna facilitates satellite-based Internet connectivity and telemedicine services for the hospital.

The 21st Century Battlefield Is Fought on the Tactical Edge

Karl FuchsBy Karl Fuchs, Vice President, Technology, iDirect Government Technologies

The quicker soldiers can receive updated and accurate information, the more effective they become. Airborne satellite communications is playing its part in this new paradigm, allowing our military to communicate in the air with troops at sea, on land, and deployed in remote locations, where terrain and range can interfere with communications signals.

Advances in the speed and throughput of SATCOM signals have made high-definition (HD) video a reality for airborne applications. With the ability to upload full-motion video while in flight, high-speed airborne SATCOM can be used for intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance missions as well as voice, video and data applications for the military and to fortify disaster response efforts. Using SATCOM technologies, the military and emergency responder communities can make command assignments and target imagery of natural and man-made disasters.

Vizada Introduces Seamless IP Mobility With AviLink(SM)

Vizada, the world’s largest independent satellite communications provider, and its technology partner ARINC collaborated last week to validate AviLink performance in an airborne environment. AviLink is a custom-designed capability that provides fully managed, automated handovers between Ku and L-band coverage areas for high-demand, mission-critical applications in flight, on land or at sea. The capability was first developed to meet the needs of a U.S. Department of Defense (DOD) contract in 2010 and is now being offered to additional military, government and commercial customers.

Testing was performed on the ground and in rain darkened skies using commercial Ku-band capacity on the SES World Skies AMC-3 satellite with the iDirect Government Technologies (iGT) e8350 DVB/S2 compliant modem and a 17-inch airborne antenna mounted on a Sierra Nevada Corporation provided King Air 300 aircraft. In addition to confirming the system’s ability to peak IP data rates in excess of 2 Mbps off the aircraft, AviLink intelligence was used to demonstrate its ability to concurrently stream high-quality color and IR video to the ground while passengers onboard watched streaming video, completed toll quality voice calls, downloaded multi-megabyte files and sent and received emails through their corporate VPNs. These flight trials verified AviLink’s ability to provide continuous communications from gate to gate, at speeds up to 330 kTAS and during aggressive aircraft maneuvers with up to 60 degree banks.
