UltiSat is a leading provider of remote communications and professional services to governments, in particular the US Government, and to International Government Organisations (IGOs) and Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs). The acquisition strengthens Speedcast’s position in the Government and NGO sectors, complementing Speedcast’s government activities in Australia, Asia, Europe and Latin America.

UltiSat CEO Mohammed G. Abutaleb will lead the newly-formed Government division at Speedcast that will be focused on providing communication solutions and professional services to Speedcast’s and UltiSat’s existing and new Government and IGO customers, as well as driving new growth in the nearly $5B market for government and military satellite communications. Intelsat, operator of the world’s first Globalized Network and leader in integrated satellite communications, announced three new leadership appointments expected to drive product development, innovation and growth for the organization and its customers. Under the new structure, Jean-Philippe Gillet will lead the Broadband business, Mark Rasmussen will head the Mobility business and Robert Cerbone joins the company as the head of the Media Services business.

Intelsat’s Mobility business provides satellite services across the maritime, oil and gas, and aeronautics sectors. In his new role, Mark Rasmussen will lead a team responsible for strategy and new product and service development for the global mobility sector, including expansion of the new IntelsatOne Flex Maritime and Aeronautic managed services. Mr. Rasmussen’s team will also develop innovative solutions to support emerging technology markets such as the connected car and Internet of Things. Mr. Rasmussen has more than 18 years of experience in enterprise network solutions, including mobility, serving in a variety of sales and marketing leadership positions. This latest endorsement follows that of Inmarsat earlier this year recommending the emulator to their partners for testing all Global Xpress (GX) applications and solutions off-air without a terminal. According to the company, GateHouse Telecom is already the leading independent provider of complete embedded software within Inmarsat’s BGAN system, with approximately 50 percent of the active 120,000 BGAN terminals in use today operating GateHouse software.
GateHouse Telecom aims to replicate their BGAN success in the Global Xpress network with their new GLE emulator.

The tool is small enough to slip into a laptop bag unnoticed, is lightweight and easily held in the palm of the hand. Once up and running, any GX package can be replicated, allowing end users, partners and anyone else in the distribution channel to see first-hand what those packages provide. The GX packages can also be manipulated to fit bespoke needs. The data usage and statistics tools allows comparison of packages and decide which is best for a specific use-case. Rain effects, blockage conditions, congestion, and so on, can also be added to test and demonstrate using real life scenarios. As the lorries, buses and Ubers battle in the traffic snarl of Old Street roundabout, few of their drivers ever look up. If they were to, they’d see the unsightly office block that houses the coolest HQ in town.
Inmarsat. You may never have heard of it, but it operates a dozen satellites far out in space, covering the planet with data. Each costs $500 million (£390 million) to build and launch.
All are controlled by Inmarsat’s mission control in this dingy corner of EC1. The rocket scientists — how often do you meet one of them? — sit behind a curved bank of computers in a dark room the size of a tennis court, real-life James T Kirks, Spocks and Scotties. Tapping away on keyboards, they peer at a wall of screens showing flattened maps of the world. Flashing lights indicate customers using the networks.
Next door, overlooking the humdrum East End — altitude: 82 feet above sea level — sit two pilots, a 20-something lad and a 30-something woman, hunched over their keyboards. Each fingerstroke adjusts the course of a seven-tonne spacecraft travelling at 6899mph, each about 22,000 miles above Earth’s atmosphere.
A few floors down, in an office crammed with model rockets, satellites and a stray bottle of rum sits the Inmarsat captain. Chief executive Rupert Pearce is sitting now, but he’s only using a chair for my benefit — his usual desk is one of those stand-up jobs.
