Gogo is hoping to pick up installs for its satellite-based 2Ku In-Flight Connectivity (IFC) solution 10-fold by the end of the year. While 2Ku is now flying on three airlines: launch customer Aeromexico, Delta Air Lines and Virgin Atlantic, as of now, the technology is only in service on 10 aircraft. But the company hopes to eventually install 2Ku on 750 aircraft annually as they look to grow the number of airframes the technology has received Supplemental Type Certificates (STCs) for across the commercial aviation market.
Gogo CEO Michael Small told investors and reports during the company’s second quarter conference call on Aug. 4, that the IFC provider has “continued to build significant momentum” behind its 2Ku technology.
“We received six supplemental type certificates to install 2Ku on various aircraft types [during the second quarter] including the narrow-body Airbus A319, the Boeing 737-800, and the wide-body A330 and A340. In July, the first factory retrofit of the 2Ku system was installed on the A350 aircraft,” Small said during the call. The number is less than half of the 15 STCs Gogo is pursuing, but he was careful to note that the first STCs tend to be the most difficult to ascertain, and was happy to have the aircraft with the largest fleets already under their belt: the 737-800 and the A319. Maritime connectivity provider Marlink is seeing an uptick in demand across both merchant and cruise markets, compensating for dips in the oil and offshore segments, which Tore Morten Olsen, president of maritime at Marlink, expects to continue into 2017.
“The oil price will probably continue slowly upwards but it takes time before the maritime markets related to the oil industry will come back to normal levels. We follow the trends closely at the same time as we also see new business coming in from the markets that are more challenged these days. This is in part due to the fact that optimal communication services can achieve efficiencies, helping operators to save money by working smarter and making more use of connected software and data,” Olsen told Via Satellite.
Driving the merchant shipping market is the ability to use software and sensors to monitor key parameters onboard vessels, such as fuel consumption, with the aim of operating more efficiently and reducing costs, according to Olsen. Based in Dallas, Texas, Sevis Systems, has released the latest version of their Intelligent Backhaul Optimization (IBO) suite of applications—the suite now includes the much anticipated ‘Backhaul Offload’ application.
Backhaul Offload allows Mobile Network Operators (MNO’s) to leverage HTS spot beams to offload traffic in locations with pre-existing terrestrial backhaul links experiencing high utilization. New agreement supports Inmarsat ‘building block’ development strategy
Inmarsat and VT iDirect announced an extension of their long-term strategic partnership with the formation of a joint research & development (R&D) team – i2 – to support the development of the next generation satellite communications (satcom) technologies. This venture is a logical next step in the Inmarsat and VT iDirect relationship, having worked successfully together over the past four years to develop the GX program.
The R&D project team, which will be based at Inmarsat’s headquarters in London, will focus on the proof-of-concept and prototype phases for new satcom technologies. Inmarsat and VT iDirect will jointly assess the commercial potential of each new technology before the decision is taken to deploy it in the form of a new product or service. Both companies’ partners and end-users will enjoy privileged access to the new technologies.

Inmarsat has completed the launch of its Global Xpress constellation. Now, it is time to deliver on the promise of these High Throughput Satellites and become an even bigger force in mobility, particularly in the maritime and aviation markets.
Inmarsat CEO Rupert Pearce sees a big future in connected transportation, so much so that he believes aviation could ultimately usurp maritime as the biggest revenue generator for the operator. Right now, commercial aviation accounts for around 10 percent of Inmarsat’s overall Mobile Satellite Services (MSS) revenues, so it still has some way to go, but Pearce sees many reasons why aeronautical connectivity could become number one.
