Fire up high-speed DVB-S2X networks while dialing up the speed of your S2 networks
In a price-sensitive market like Africa, every saving counts. Every opportunity a service provider has to lower bandwidth costs for customers should be seized. Every chance to reduce internal operating costs should be pursued. And in a traditionally capex-heavy industry, any transformation in how networks infrastructure is purchased and deployed is graciously welcome.
Fortunately, the prospect for better business economics is improving as satellite capacity comes online in greater abundance, at lower price points and at higher frequencies. The availability of stronger multi-spot beams and higher-powered transponders gives service providers the opportunity to substantially improve efficiencies and deliver more throughput over their given bandwidth.
In order to maximize efficiency and performance on the satellite, many service providers are looking to the new DVB-S2X standard. Compared to DVB-S2, the DVB-S2X standard features higher MODCODs (64APSK to 256APSK), finer granularity and better SNR values for better transponder saturation and to maximize the efficient use of the massive new amounts of HTS bandwidth.
To truly gain the benefits of DVB-S2X, service providers need a system-wide approach. At iDirect, we’ve done just that with a groundbreaking DVB-S2X product suite that enables fast and comprehensive adoption of the new standard.
Our new product line addresses higher hub processing capabilities and performance through powerful line cards and virtualized components, while consolidating massive hub infrastructure needed to operate networks on multiple spot-beams.
It starts with our next-generation Universal Line Card (ULC). These line cards feature higher MODCODs to achieve greater throughput on the same amount of bandwidth. The ULC-T (transmit line card) supports DVB-S2X up to 125MHz, and up to 119Msps carriers.
We will also enable higher processing and embedded compute capabilities on the hub side via virtualization technology. This consists of virtualized instances of protocol processors, which allows for a reduction in overall footprint and energy consumption while adding unprecedented levels of processing and performance capabilities at the hub to support “line rate” performance for 119Msps DVB-S2X carriers and beyond.
The implementation of DVB-S2X also requires more intelligence at the remote side to push new levels of performance to fuel an accelerated need for more speed and higher throughput.
As part of our DVB-S2X product suite, we’re introducing next-generation ASIC remotes, the iQ Series supporting a range of throughput requirements based on your market needs. The initial remote in the iQ series portfolio will be a very compact desktop model.
The iQ series will feature a high level of programmability and availability of over-the-air software features adding even greater future-proofing elements. This provides greater flexibility for partners later for inventoried and deployed terminals while also allowing that the remote is competitively priced to support a variety of business needs.
For many service providers, however, shifting to DVB-S2X will not be immediate. It will happen gradually over the next several years. So they will benefit from stepping up the performance of their existing DVB-S2 networks to capture current demand for higher throughout networks.
