2010 Year-in-Review: Taking VSAT Further

By David Bettinger
iDirect CTO and Senior VP, Engineering

As 2010 winds down, we take stock of several notable moments and opportunities.  The satellite industry saw robust growth in key industries; a positive sign for our partners. At iDirect, we made a concerted effort to continue to enhance the capabilities of existing technologies allowing our partners to deliver more bandwidth at a lower cost, ensure higher availability and reliability, offer a broader mix of services, and, most important, grow and differentiate their business.

iDirect boosted its product offering by acquiring the award-winning SatManage network management software suite. SatManage offers a sophisticated array of web-based software tools for automation, monitoring, and integration of hybrid networks and NOC-based applications. As of this writing, leading service providers such as MTN, Intelsat General, and BT have evaluated SatManage and are implementing it.

During the past year, we continued to see good growth in the maritime market. According to the 2nd edition of the Maritime VSAT report, maritime VSAT services grew as much as 30 percent between 2005 and 2009. As adoption of VSAT shows no signs of slowing down in this burgeoning arena, iDirect is committed to ramping up technology innovation and end-user education.

We also saw heightened demand for VSAT in the cellular backhaul market. The arrival of IP-enabled mobile infrastructure equipment combined with recent advancements in VSAT technology has finally made rural service affordable for mobile operators. They’ll now have the opportunity to support core operations more cost-effectively and expand their offerings.

2011 promises to be another exciting year for satellite operators and iDirect expects to have a major impact on the satcoms landscape. We will introduce several new capabilities that will dramatically improve efficiency and flexibility on the inbound channel, comparable to the efficiency gains that DVB-S2 enabled for the outbound channel.

Last but not least, we would like to thank each and every one of our dedicated service providers for their business and continued support of our offerings over the years. And, we look forward to extending those relationships into next year and beyond.
